What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) which affects the insulating part of the nerves disrupting the transmission of signals to the muscles. As muscles work through signals being carried down the nerves, this affects movement.
Diagnosis of MS is complex and as inflammation can occur anywhere is the CNS there are many different symptoms that vary from person to person.
There are three main types:
- A relapsing and remitting type, when the person has ’bouts’ of MS which are difficult periods, followed by some recovery.
- Primary Progressive.
- Secondary Progressive which is a stage that can come after relapsing remitting.
MS can cause pain, muscle spasms, changes in posture and coordination, reduced strength and balance and muscle stiffness. Physiotherapy and in particular neurophysiotherapy can provide treatment for all of these symptoms.
How heads up! can help those with Multiple Sclerosis
Heads up! can help by providing specialist tailored treatment which is hands on, and advice for management at home which includes the provision of a home exercise programme. At heads up! we treat every person as an individual and treatment can benefit you at whatever stage you are at. Physiotherapy is helpful whatever your level of ability and it can have a positive effect on your quality of life.
The benefits of physiotherapy for Multiple Sclerosis and what will happen in treatment
Neurophysiotherapists are specially trained to deal with people who have neurological problems and physiotherapy can be very beneficial for people with MS. At heads up! we like to see people soon after their diagnosis. However, physiotherapy treatment can help at any stage after diagnosis. We can help by providing explanations about treatment , talking through concerns and worries, and addressing any problems as they arise.
We will assess your posture, core strength and stability, limb strength and sensation, gait and functional abilities. We will also assess your physical difficulties, help improve movement and strength and maximise independence.
We can provide a personalised stretching and exercise routine. We also provide advice on fatigue, exercise and lifestyle management.
